I don’t understand why some feminists insist that women should be able to go topples in public like men do. Our culture has sexualized a women’s body and making it legal for a women to show her body in public isn’t going to suddenly change the way men view it. In fact, I…

To clarify I am not saying women should not be allowed to go topless because men view them sexually. I am saying that if women hope to change society to not view them sexually, going topless in public is not the next rational step. There are in fact cultures in which women are not sexualized in a way that they can be publicly topless. If Western culture reflected that, I would not be opposed, I think that would be a beautiful thing. But thinking we can jump the progression of a culture and go straight to everyone walking around naked without being viewed differently is not a passionate idea of progressive feminism but a thought birthed in naivety.

If you want to get pissed off about something, get pissed at pornography. Pornography is ruining societies perceptions of the female body, making it out to be a sexual implement for the purpose of pleasing men. If you want to be naked in public and not viewed as an object for pleasing men; attack the industry which is indoctrinating men with the idea that naked women = sexual gratification.

P.S my remark about shirtless men was slightly an attempt at humour but also pointing out that I don’t believe being topless is really a privilege worth fighting for. If a law was passed tomorrow that men could not be shirtless outside of their homes and designated areas (nude beaches etc. you know the same places women can be topless) I would feel no sorrow. Wearing a shirt really isn’t that painful. Being respected as a person is about a lot more than being naked in public.

Our culture has sexualized a women’s body and making it legal for a women to show her body in public isn’t going to suddenly change the way men view it. In fact, I suspect it would have quite the opposite effect.

Besides that, I would rather nobody took their shirts off in public anyway. Sometimes I want to go to a mall or walk downtown without my eyes being assaulted by some dudes sasquatch beer belly.
